How to Use Photoshop Actions

Preparation

You will need the following items before you can install Photoshop actions.

Instructions

Here are 2 easy methods to use Photoshop Actions.

There are more complex ways to use actions, but most of the time I use one of these two methods

Photoshop Actions Method 1: Multiple Image Files

1. Launch Photoshop

2. Open 1 or more image files in Photoshop. Note: In this method, all of the opened files will have the action applied to them. Save and close any files that you do not want to apply the action to before continuing to step 3.

3. In the menu bar, select: File > Automate > Batch

4. In the resulting batch window, do the following:

  • Select an action "Set" using the first dropdown menu on the top left
  • Select  the individual action you would like to use in the second dropdown menu.
  • Make sure the "Source" Dropdown menu is set to "Opened Files"

5. Press  the "OK" button in the top right of the batch window.

6. The Action is now activated, and photoshop will apply it to every opened file. This may be quick or slow depending on the size of the images and how complex the action is.

7. If there is no Save step in the action, you will have to save each file before closing Photoshop. Saving a copy of each file is recommended, in case you need to go back to the original image for any reason.

8. That's it!

Photoshop Actions Method 2: Single Image Files

1. Launch Photoshop

2. Open 1 or more image files in Photoshop.

3. If you have more than one image opened in Photoshop, click anywhere in the top bar of the  image you would like to apply the action to. This will bring your selected image into focus.

3. locate the Actions Palette. This can be found by using the Menu Bar at the top of the screen: Window > Actions

4. In the actions palette, select the Actions Set, then the individual action you would like to apply to the Image.

5. On the bottom right of the Actions Palette, there is a "Play" button in the shape of a triangle pointing right. Press the play button.

6. The Action is now activated, and photoshop will apply it to only the one file you selected in step 3.

7. If there is no Save step in the action, you will have to save the file before closing Photoshop. Saving a copy of the file is recommended, in case you need to go back to the original image for any reason.

8. That's it!
